During this operation, a police spy camera van equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) was used to detect and record instances of individuals using mobile phones while driving or not wearing seat belts.

Head of the Safer Roads Unit, Simon Gomer, emphasized that the technology employed in the AI-equipped van effectively demonstrated the prevalence of these offenses. The van utilizes two cameras to capture the footage, enabling law enforcement to identify and document numerous incidents of distracted driving and failure to adhere to seat belt regulations.

This operation serves as a notable example of how AI technology can be employed to enhance law enforcement efforts in ensuring road safety. By utilizing advanced surveillance capabilities, such as the AI-equipped van, authorities can effectively identify and address behaviors that pose a significant risk to motorists and the general public.

During the week-long operation, a total of 86 drivers were identified by the van as suspected of using a mobile phone while driving. The van is equipped with two cameras that capture different angles to detect such behavior. The first camera is positioned at a shallow angle, allowing it to identify a mobile phone close to the driver’s ear or if a seat belt is not being worn. The second camera is positioned at a steeper angle to specifically identify if a mobile phone is being used for texting.

Once the offenses are automatically identified by the AI system, the results undergo a double-checking process by human operators. This additional step ensures the accuracy of the identifications before the information is passed on to the police for further review and potential enforcement actions.

The use of AI technology combined with human verification helps to improve the reliability of the identification process, ensuring that only valid cases are forwarded to the authorities. This system plays a crucial role in promoting safer driving habits and discouraging the dangerous practice of using mobile phones while operating a vehicle.

During the week-long operation, Mr. Gomer reported that there were several concerning findings. The operation utilized the latest AI technology and aimed to address the issue of distracted driving. Unfortunately, the results showed just how prevalent these offenses are in our society.

One of the major findings was that 86 drivers were identified as suspected of using a phone while driving. This is a dangerous behavior that can significantly impair a driver’s ability to focus on the road, increasing the risk of accidents. Additionally, 273 drivers or passengers were suspected of not wearing seat belts. Wearing a seat belt is a vital safety measure that can greatly reduce the severity of injuries in the event of a collision.

Moreover, the operation also uncovered 132 mechanical offenses related to issues with the vehicles. These mechanical issues could pose serious risks on the road if not addressed promptly. It is essential for vehicle owners to properly maintain their vehicles to ensure the safety of themselves and others.

Furthermore, the operation led to the arrest of five individuals for drug driving and disqualified driving. These arrests highlight the need for stricter enforcement and penalties to deter individuals from engaging in these dangerous behaviors.

Mr. Gomer emphasized the importance of spreading the message that distracted driving kills and that these offenses will be punished. He also emphasized the need for a change in social habits regarding safe driving practices. It is clear that there is still much work to be done in order to address these issues effectively and ensure the safety of all road users.
